We were surprised by the announcement a few months ago that legendary British photographer Tim Walker would be lensing the next Pirelli Calendar and even more surprised to learn that the calendar’s 2018 focus would be celebrating diversity. As an institution built upon featuring semi-clad (and overwhelmingly white) supermodels, the Pirelli Calendar didn’t exactly strike us as the sort of space for progression – but then it has certainly shown improvement over recent years, introducing female photographers and featuring women for their intelligence, rather than just their looks.

Now the 2018 Pirelli Calendar has finally been unveiled and it looks to be the most progressive one yet. For next year’s calendar, Walker has used an all black cast, which includes Naomi Campbell, RuPaul, Whoopi Goldberg, Adwoa Aboah, Lupita Nyong’o and more. Styled by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the calendar certainly charts new territory for Pirelli. “Alice has been told so many times,” Tim Walker explains. “And I think I wanted to go back to the genesis of the imagination behind Lewis Carroll so that you could tell it from the very beginning again. I wanted to find a different and original angle.”
