Summer is generally the time we like to get deep on sustainability, because it also happens to be the season in which we spend the most time outside. And sustainable fashion, by its very nature, is that which minimises environmental harm. This means clothing that’s comprised of fibres free from pesticides, made in closed loop systems, or with a view to reducing water and chemical waste through low impact dyes.

Despite what some fast fashion retailers may have you think, sustainability is not just about ‘natural’ fabrics. Because conventional cotton crops are actually among the dirtiest in the world, accounting for a disproportionate percentage of the world’s pesticides and insecticides, despite occupying just a small percentage of land.

Add this to the fact that approximately 1 million people are hospitalised for pesticide poisoning in India alone each year. Or the fact that 85% of the human-made materials found in the ocean are materials, such as nylon and acrylic, used to produce clothing. In other words, sustainable fashion brands start to look pretty damn great, pretty damn fast. Which is why we’re taking advantage of our summer sale right now, to build a sustainable capsule wardrobe on sale – for maximum versatility, with minimum impact.

Here’s how:

1) Base your capsule wardrobe around a great top

In my humble opinion, a great capsule wardrobe begins with the perfect top, to form your base. This can then be paired with jeans or shorts, but will always give you something to fall back on in a pinch. Better still if said top is crafted from 100% certified fairtrade organic cotton denim, like the Revery Top by Kowtow.

2) A subtle pop of colour, by way of a sustainable bra

A subtle pop of colour can see you through those last days of summer – when the weather is too hot to think about getting dressed and all you can manage is a T-shirt dress. Enter the Base Range Mississippi Velour Bra, which comes in a bright fuschia colour palette that will liven up any outfit. Did we mention that it’s crafted from sustainable Modal?

3) A white jean, to make you feel like Françoise Hardy

White jeans always remind me of Françoise Hardy – and if they’re good enough for this effortlessly chic French style icon, then they’re good enough for me. I particularly love Kowtow’s Stage Pant, because they are a high waist, straight leg style, crafted from 100% certified fair trade organic cotton denim.

4) A pair of shorts, for when you’re melting in a heatwave

If you’re melting through this heatwave rn (like us), then you will appreciate the addition of a pair of easy, breezy shorts in your summer capsule wardrobe. Fortunately, Good Studios has got you covered with their high waist style, which is crafted from a sustainable blend of hemp and organic cotton.

5) A denim dress, for everyday

No summer capsule wardrobe would be complete without the perfect sustainable dress and the Panel Dress is it. Crafted from 100% certified fair trade organic cotton denim, this panelled, button-down dress features contrast stitching and side seam pockets, for ultimate ease and wearability. You’re welcome.
