Chloë Sevigny Can't Look Past a Great Summer Dress and Neither Can We

Chloë Sevigny was born in a town called Springfield and while not actually a Simpsons character, she has become just as iconic over the years. This is not just because of her arresting talent as an actress — although she has won a slew of awards for said talent, including a 2010 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, granted for her role as polygamist Nicolette Grant in the HBO series Big Love.

Her iconoclasm isn’t even just because she has become the undisputed darling of indie cinema, starring in arthouse classics like Boys Don’t Cry and Kids by Harmony Korine (whom she also dated by the way). What I think really sets Chloë Sevigny apart from the crowd, though, is her refusal to conform. It’s something that’s apparent in her acting method, as well as her approach to personal style.

Sevigny’s style is difficult to put a finger on exactly; except to say that it represents a seamless blend between masculine and feminine elements. On the one hand, she practically lives in girly dresses all year-round — but on the other, she seems to have an innate understanding of how to offset some of the most feminine styles with just the right touch of masculinity. Whether that’s by way of a boxy-cut neckline, a chunky shoe style or the eternal ease of a t-shirt dress.

Either way, the actress, model and muse always manages to makes a statement with her boldly coloured, carefully printed or elaborately detailed styles. She stands out from the crowd precisely because she isn’t afraid to take risks — like wearing flat sandals on the red carpet for example. Or dressing down for elegant evening occasions. In fact, sometimes it is actually these more simple dresses that speak the loudest when donned by this particular style icon. Suffice to say then, Chloë Sevigny can’t look past a great summer dress and neither can we.

1) A white lace dress

There is something so overtly girlish about a white lace dress, but somehow Chloë Sevigny manages to make this look work with just the right balance of tough femininity. Perhaps it’s got something to do with the bold red lip, or the slightly sheer texture with her black bra showing through. Either way, it has got summer written all over it.

2) A printed style

Whether it’s a big floral or a bold, checkered style, Chloë Sevigny is all about a printed style of summer dress. This is especially true when the actress is busy challenging the norm of high-octane glamour on the red carpet or at fancy fashion parties. Somehow, her badass approach just feels far more refreshing in amidst all the sequins.

3) A square cut dress

Nothing demonstrates Chloë Sevigny’s knack for merging masculinity with femininity quite as well as a dress with a boxy, square cut neckline. Toughened up with bold jewellery and a razored bob, she strikes just the perfect balance — proving that it really is possibly to be elegant and tough all at once.

4) A bright yellow number

Chloë Sevigny is never one to shy away from a bold colour palette — or even a somewhat unexpected hue such as canary yellow. Rendered in the softest silk though, it is somehow a luxe statement that we can’t go past for those fancy occasions that summer always seems to bring in spades.

5) A t-shirt dress

Finally, what could possibly feel so essentially ‘summer’ as a timeless t-shirt style dress? We love the printed style of this one that Chloë Sevigny wears while out and about on the streets of New York. Especially when paired with a chunky, wooden-soled shoe and a shaggy, I-just-woke-up-like-this hairdo. We would like to emulate this look all throughout summer pretty please.
