Because we are leaving the house less these days, we have started experimenting with all sorts of DIY beauty rituals – from recreating the facial experience at home, to mixing up our own lotions and potions.

But it can be hard to know which homemade beauty treatments actually work. So we turned to a few skincare experts, to bring you three effective DIY beauty hacks that you can whip up with what you've got at home.

1) A Honey Face Mask

According to Sydney-based skin expert Melanie Grant, honey makes a really effective (and affordable) face mask. In an Instagram Live interview with Gritty Pretty’s Eleanor Pendleton, the celebrity facialist recommends simply warming some honey up in your hands and applying it all over your face and neck. Leave the mask on for around 20 minutes, while you have a bath or shower, and then remove by buffing away with a warm wash cloth.

2) A Sugar Scrub

To buff up winter skin, Glamour Magazine recommends making a DIY sugar scrub, like this one from All About the Pretty's Julia Coney. All you need to do is mix one cup of brown suar with one cup of raw oatmeal and one cup of good quality oil like coconut, almond or olive oil. Then apply onto dry skin in a circular scrubbing motion, before rinsing off in the shower.

3) A Hair Mask

According to Into The Gloss, the 'Luscious Locks' DIY hair mask originates from a Wiccan beauty spell. All you have to do is combine one cup of olive oil with the jucie of one lemon, plus one teaspoon of water mixed with one teaspoon of lavender essential oil. Now mix in one egg (which is chock full of hair-friendly fatty acids and proteins) and lather your hair with the mask, leaving for up to 30 minutes and rinsing well to remove.
