Yep, as of July 29, 2019 (US time), humanity has used more resources – including water, soil, and clean air – than can be regenerated in an entire year.

This news comes from a report by sustainability and international research organisation, The Global Footprint Network, which determines this day by calculating “the number of days of that year that Earth’s biocapacity suffices to provide for humanity’s Ecological Footprint”. The Global Footprint Network calls the day on which humanity’s use of resources exceeds the resources that can be generated in that year Earth Overshoot Day.

July 29 is Earth Overshoot Day for 2019.

According to the report, Earth Overshoot Day has occurred earlier this year than it has ever occured in previous years, and we would need 1.75 earths to produce enough resources to meet humanity’s current usage.

“We have only got one Earth – this is the ultimately defining context for human existence. We can’t use 1.75 without destructive consequences,” said Mathis Wackernagel, co-inventor of Ecological Footprint accounting and founder of Global Footprint Network.

The Global Footprint Network is advocating for its #MoveTheDate campaign, which attempts to move the date back 5 days every year, which would 'allow humanity to reach one-planet compatibility before 2050'.

The fashion industry is one of the most resource intensive industries in the world, and contributes to this problem. According to the Guardian, the fashion industry ‘is contributing more to climate change than the aeronautical and shipping industries combined. If trends continue, the industry could account for a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050'.
