HARA is a sustainable lingerie label that speaks to all women. Focussed around items we all wear every day, this brand is making a big impact with its focus on natural dyes, sustainable bamboo and a beautiful philosophy of caring for both people and the planet. Here, founder Allie Cameron shares her story.

Rosie Dalton: Can you tell us how HARA came to be?
Allie Cameron
: While travelling India, I was faced with the environmental impact that the fashion industry is having on the planet. From chemical runoff to plastic use, I saw that things needed to change fast in order for our planet to survive. After spending my time on farms and talking to cotton farmers, I wanted to create a solution to the problems – a clothing label where design meets sustainability.

Rosie: Why do you believe sustainable underwear is so important?
: HARA was created to give people the opportunity to develop this awareness, develop these thought patterns and create discussion. Underwear allows us to relate these ideas to everyone, [because it’s] something we all wear on a daily basis. Everyone is held responsible and accountable for the future of the environment.

Rosie: How does HARA seek to minimise impact?
: Firstly through fabric. We use high-quality bamboo, which is eco-friendly and produced in a closed-loop system. We only source our bamboo from suppliers that can provide organic certifications, which proves no harmful chemicals were used (and no harmful chemicals are present on the final product). Bamboo is the most sustainable raw material on earth. No pesticides, insecticides or fertilisers are used and only rainwater is needed for growing.

Secondly, through natural dyes and a natural filtration system – so no chemical waste occurs. We have recently created a natural dye house in Australia, so we’re dying all our fabric in-house using only natural ingredients. It’s important to have control over this, as conventional dying processes cause major damage to people and the environment.

Finally, our vision is to give back. Which is why we’ve partnered with The Environmental Justice Foundation.
