How To Incorporate Colour When Colour Normally Terrifies You

If you’re anything like me, then you tend to live in shades of black all year round. And, don’t get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with black. In fact, I’m quite proud of the fact that my style icons range from Wednesday Addams and the Black Swan, to Catwoman and Parisian women in general. I think you get the picture – I really like black. I mean, a little black dress will always be a timeless wardrobe investment. But even Holly Golightly understood the impact that could be achieved by introducing a pop of colour here and there. 

The film Breakfast at Tiffany’s is full of statement moments like this – a bold pink dress here, or a striking orange coat there. Because here’s the thing: when you tend to live in black, there is great shock factor to be enjoyed when you introduce a little colour. This is a discovery that I chanced upon over the weekend, after borrowing a friend’s bright blue dress for my cousin’s wedding. What I realised is that it’s actually downright thrilling to experiment with colour every now and then. So, with that in mind, here are five failsafe ways that you, too, can introduce colour into your wardrobe – even when colour normally terrifies you.

1) Start with a colourful accessory

Sometimes the most accessible way to start introducing colour into your wardrobe is through a bright accessory like a Matt and Nat handbag. More noncommittal than a full colour injection, this represents a good way to ease into the whole colour thing and start working out which tones you are most drawn to – as well as those that pair well with the high-rotation wardrobe pieces you already own.

2) Choose a colourful focal point

Another good way to approach colour when you’re anything like me and consider yourself a colour novice is to focus on introducing just one colourful focal point at a time. That could be something subtle like the aforementioned handbag – or even a bold shade of lipstick. Or it could be a statement top that works well with your favourite pair of jeans and won’t push you too far out of your comfort zone. But my personal favourite here is a bright dress that will garner many a compliment at family functions.

3) Brighten up your activewear routine

If you’re not sure whether you’re ready to dive headfirst into the rainbow colour spectrum, then why not start by incorporating some colourful accents into your workout routine instead? This can be a fun way to brighten up your evening run or yoga classes, while also getting a feel for which colours work best for you. Then, if you feel so inclined, you can also apply that knowledge to your day and nighttime wardrobe looks as well.

4) Consider a print instead

Block colours aren’t the only way to incorporate some brightness into your wardrobe, so why not experiment with a fun print as well? This can be a great way to add extra impact to your look, whether it be via a printed dress or a highlight piece like a skirt or camisole. Either way, this will certainly help to break up a wardrobe that's dominant in black, keeping things interesting for the warmer months ahead.

5) Take the plunge with all-over colour

All that tentative toe-dipping aside, sometimes a fear of colour is best addressed by diving in headfirst instead and embracing all-over colour in head-to-toe fashion. This could mean a colourful suit, for example, or simply incorporating echoes of the same shade right throughout your look – such as a pale blue cami with a skirt in a slightly darker hue. Either way, this is one sure-fire way to kick an aversion to colour.
