In 2018, ethical fashion went viral. Celebrities like Meghan Markle were largely responsible for this spike in the popularity of ethical and sustainable brands. According to Lyst’s Year in Fashion report, brands saw a 200% increase in searches for their products after Meghan Markle was seen wearing them. The website also reported a 47% increase in shoppers searching for sustainable and ethical fashion. These stats prove that celebrity endorsements can change the way people consume fashion.

Meghan Markle made a sustainable fashion statement on her wedding day by wearing a custom-made Stella McCartney dress to her reception. Now, Miley Cyrus has done the same. Cyrus wore a simple white gown on her wedding day. The understated dress, which could definitely be worn again and again, was custom-made by Vivienne Westwood.

As well as being an incredibly talented designer, Westwood is an outspoken critic of overconsumption and unnecessary waste. Her sustainable clothing mantra is “Buy less, choose well, make it last” and her collections are often themed around conservation. In her spare time, Westwood protests for the protection of the environment. (If you’ve got a spare minute, do yourself a favour and watch this video of her dancing to ABBA in protest of fracking.)

It’s great to see a huge celeb like Miley Cyrus endorsing a huge designer like Vivienne Westwood. Cyrus' choice to wear this timeless gown on her wedding day could help to make sustinable fashion more mainstream. If even a few of her 79.3 million Instagram followers become familiar with Westwood’s design philosophy, and her activism, then the world will change for the better!
