More people shopped sustainability in 2018 than ever before, according to Lyst's Year in Fashion report. The website reported a 47% increase in shoppers searching for sustainable and ethical brands this year. Related search terms like 'vegan leather', 'organic cotton' and 'Econyl' were also popular with shoppers.

Ethical and sustainable brands, like the wonderful Veja, made it into Lyst's 'most searched for' round-ups for the first time ever this year too. The low-impact sneakers were the most popular brand on Instagram in 2018, according to data collected by Lyst. The website monitored Instagram mentions and tags during the year to determine that Veja was the internet's favourite brand. The sneakers were also the tenth most popular shoes on Lyst, with brand searches increasing by 133% this year. Our other favourite practical shoes — Tevas, duh! — were ranked ninth in Lyst's round-up of global best-sellers. Other gorpcore staples, like bike shorts, puffer jackets and 'dad sneakers', also made it onto this list.

The popularity of these sustainable brands is due in part to the Meghan Markle effect. Lyst reports that brands usually see a 200% increase in searches for their products after the Duchess of Sussex has worn them. Last month, the internet went crazy for Veja’s V10 sneakers in white black after Markle was spotted wearing them in Sydney.

All in all these results show that more people are showing an interest in (and actually buying) ethical and sustainable brands than ever before, which is great news for people and the planet!
