New York may soon join other US cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles in banning fur for good. The Fashion Law reports that new legislation has just been introduced by City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, which would prohibit the sale of fur in New York City. This coincides with New York Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal announcing similar – but broader – legislation to the state’s Assembly earlier last month.

While Johnson’s bill addresses the issue on a city level and with respect to clothing in particular, Rosenthal’s proposed bill would ban the manufacturing of all fur state-wide and also make it illegal to “sell, offer for sale, display for sale, trade, give, donate, or otherwise distribute a fur product by any means in the state” starting from January 1st 2021.

This comes at a time when many brands have begun distancing themselves from fur and other animal skins. Gucci, Chanel and Versace have all made bold statements in this regard and are joined by the likes of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Vivienne Westwood. As Gucci said about fur last year, “it’s not modern.” Either way, it seems that times are finally changing.
