Paris has long been known as the fashion capital of the world, and now the French city wants to become known as a world-leader in sustainability too. Last Monday, government officials and industry leaders announced a bold new plan to make Paris the sustainable fashion capital of the world by 2024. The 'Paris Good Fashion' initiative will bring designers and experts together to help make the fashion industry greener.

“Paris Good Fashion is an open community regrouping fashion professionals, brands, entrepreneurs, designers and experts who will be working together to establish a roadmap of the steps that can be taken to make Paris the sustainable capital of fashion,” said former fashion journalist Isabelle Lefort, who launched the plan alongside the deputy mayor of cultural diversity and nightlife, Frédéric Hocquard, and the deputy mayor of social economy and solidarity, Antoinette Guhl.

The group will unveil its sustainability roadmap in June this year. The document will focus on three main issues:

1) Creating a circular economy.
2) Improving sourcing and traceability.
3) Making processes, like manufacturing, distribution and communication, more sustainable.

The plan will also look at ways to reduce the environmental impact of Paris' annual fashion weeks.

“It’s our task to invent a new future for fashion,” explained Guhl. “Our role is to encourage creation while fighting against climate change, to continue production in France while protecting natural resources and to develop our industry while looking out for our artisans. I hope this day marks the beginning of a collective movement within the fashion industry.”

The Paris administration, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and LVMH are already on-board with the initiative. The group has set itself the deadline of 2024, when the Olympics will take place in Paris, to transform the French fashion industry.
