We are used to seeing certain important information on our garment tags – namely material composition and care instructions. But what we’re not used to seeing is bold political messaging. Now, in an awesome move that is taking over the Internet, Patagonia has done just that, stitching: “VOTE THE ASSHOLES OUT” onto its latest garment tags.

“Patagonia has been one of the most vocal brands in consumer culture when it comes to politicians’ inability to take climate change seriously,” writes GQ magazine, pointing to the brand’s efforts including “suing the Trump administration to protect national monuments and donating its tax-cut cash to environmental groups.”

And, while Patagonia has always practiced what it preaches in terms of producing outdoor wear sustainably and in a minimal waste supply chain, the brand is now taking things one step further. And stitching its political stance into the actual clothing.

The particular garment tag that has been sending Twitter into a frenzy reportedly appeared on Patagonia’s Regenerative Organic Stand-Up Shorts, which the brand first started making in 1973. And, according to a Patagonia spokesperson, it references a phrase that founder Yvon Chouinard has been saying for years in reference “to politicians from any party who deny or disregard the climate crisis and ignore science.”

“We have been standing up to climate deniers for almost as long as we've been making those shorts,” the spokesperson added. In particular, Chouinard has frequently locked horns with President Donald Trump. And, with a new election looming, the brand has just announced that it will work with BallotReady on a campaign to encourage people to vote climate-change deniers out of office.

Ahead of the November 3rd election in the United States, then, Patagonia is making sure its fashion is as political as possible. Which is one small step for clothing tags, but one big step for the planet.
