Filling your bathroom up with plants will not only make you feel like you’re on a tropical holiday all year round, it will also make you healthier. According to science, plants can improve the air quality in any spaceincrease your energy levelsimprove your mental health and even make you live longer.

You’re probably already reaping the health benefits of indoor plants, but you might not know that certain leafy greens flourish in the humid environment of your bathroom.

According to allergy and immunology professor Dr. Clifford Bassett, indoor plants are already being prescribed to treat allergies.

“NASA researchers have reported that a group of common house plants can remove or scrub indoor air of various pollutants” Bassett told the Today Show website.

“As an allergist, I may prescribe certain plants to help improve indoor air quality. This is, in addition to traditional and evidence-based therapies for their allergic and respiratory conditions.”

Basset says Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, English Ivy and Peace Lilys all grow really well in the shower. Staghorn ferns, which thrive in the humidity, also come highly recommended. If you want to get really freaky with it, you can even hang a fresh bunch of eucalyptus branches on your shower rod and let the hot water draw the healing oils out of the leaves. Lush.

Shower plants need plenty of natural light and a healthy dose of daily humidity. Oh, and make sure you put them somewhere where they won’t get covered in soap!
