Sustainable tees and tops are our wardrobe staples, because we like the things we wear every day to be free from nasty chemicals, and because we like to minimise our environmental impact however we can – especially this week, which marks World Environment Day on Wednesday June 5th. It is for this reason that we have got an entire section dedicated to sustainable tees and tops.

Sustainability is incredibly important in our wardrobes, because conventional alternatives are causing much harm to Mother Earth. For example, conventional cotton is now considered the dirtiest crop in the world. It uses 2.4% of the world's cultivated land and, according to the latest figures from the Cotton Advisory Committee (CAC), conventional cotton accounts for an estimated total 5% of pesticides and 14% of insecticides worldwide. Alternatively, certified organic cotton is cultivated without these chemicals.

Sustainability is unfortunately quite a misused term these days, though, which is why we believe it is important for businesses to be clear about what they mean when they speak about sustainability. At Well Made Clothes, we define sustainable fabrics as: organic fabrics, recycled fabrics, and closed loop-certified fabrics, which are made using low-impact processes.

This includes fabrics like certified organic cotton, recycled cotton, recycled nylon, and hemp. Of hemp, for example, Anny Duff, founder and designer of Good Studios, says: "Hemp has a huge role to play in the future of sustainable fashion. It is able to grow in almost any climate with very little water and no pesticides."

Which is to say that sustainable tees and tops are better for us and better for the planet. Just as importantly, though, they also look and feel great. So here are some of our favourite sustainable tops, to help you reduce your wardrobe impact:
