We all have one of those dresses. The kind that has been sitting at the back of our wardrobes for months. Whether it’s a style you’re no longer drawn to, or one that no longer fits, we are sharing three tailoring hacks for breathing new life into that dress.

Because, according to Fashion Revolution, extending the lifecycle of our clothes by just nine months could reduce carbon, waste, and water footprints by 20-30%. Which is a good incentive to work with what we have, rather than always buying new.

So, before discarding that piece you no longer wear, first take that tired old dress and ask yourself whether any of the following hacks could help to give this garment a new lease on life.

1) A change in hemline
Sometimes all it takes to update a dress that you no longer wear is a change in hemline. Consider dropping the hem to extend the length, or having a few inches taken off, to transform the piece into a mini style. If you have some sewing skills, you can even do this at home. Alternatively, Google some great tailors in your area.

2) A fresh colour
Perhaps a dramatic change in colour is all that’s needed to liven up your old dress. The one that was made for a different season (and boasts the trend-driven hue to match). We have shared some great tips for natural tie dyeing at home, or you can seek out a responsible dye house to do the job for you.

3) A new silhouette
If your old dress doesn’t fit quite right, then a silhouette change could be the perfect solution. Consult a tailor about what’s possible in terms of letting the dress out, or having it run in for a better fit. You could even consider a neckline change here, to update the style and make it feel brand new again.
