Tim Walker is one of our all time favourite fashion photographers — known for his eccentric eye and producing imagery that is dripping with opulent details, we usually find his shoots a rich source of inspiration. But we were surprised to say the same for the Pirelli Calendar — which was, this year, lensed by none other than Walker himself. Resplendent with his usual fairytale details, we were even more impressed by the fact that the British photographer chose an all-black cast for his take on the exclusive calendar.

Released annually by the renowned tire company, the Pirelli Calendar used to be synonymous with half (or entirely) naked models. Remaking its image over the last few years though, it has become a far more inspirational and culturally relevant artifact. And under Walker’s unexpected direction, it took on a whole new form for next year.

Featuring a seemingly never-ending list of creatives like Naomi Campbell, RuPaul, Whoopi Goldberg, Adwoa Aboah, Lupita Nyong’o and more, Walker’s version of the calendar represents a twisted take on Alice in Wonderland, inspired by John Tenniel’s illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s original book. Echoing Pirelli’s all-black cast for the 1987 edition, these images were decidedly different for the calendar.

Which leads us to conclude that the famous Pirelli Calendar has now well and truly shed its penchant for nudes and entered far more inspiring territory in the process. Styled by British Vogue’s new editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, the 2018 calendar is here to prove that Pirelli has well and truly rebranded its famously exclusive almanac. Now if only we could actually see more black photographers and creatives given the top jobs in fashion, things would really be looking more positive.
