Vivienne Westwood’s advice for becoming a more responsible consumer is simple: "Buy less. Choose well. Make it last.” Her mantra is all about quality over quantity and she believes that, overwhelmingly, “everybody’s buying far too many clothes.” For the designer’s most recent ‘Menswear’ collection, this meant presenting clothing that was unisex in its appeal.

The show was held back in January this year, but the campaign imagery has just dropped and the designer had this to say about the message: "The show we presented at London Fashion Week: Mens in January this year is for man and woman. She and he are having fun with Unisex and swapping clothes,” she said in a press release. “'Buy less, choose well, make it last' limits the exploitation of the planet's natural resources. He and she have joined Intellectuals Unite (IOU) and are becoming ever more scared of Climate Change."

Dame Westwood has long been an active environmental warrior and her Fall 17 campaign continues to raise the alarm about the state of our planet’s health. As far as what individuals can do to help effect positive change, Westwood believes that using our voice and purchasing power for better can go a long way. “I know I'm lucky,” the designer concedes, but she says that even those who are more economically disadvantaged can reclaim power over their choices. "It doesn't mean therefore you have to just buy anything cheap. Instead of buying six things, buy one thing that you really like. Don't keep buying just for the sake of it.”

In other words, she says, "I just think people should invest in the world. Don't invest in fashion, but invest in the world." Her use of a crown in the Fall 17 campaign imagery is deliberate here, as the designer forces us to ask: Who are our rulers? "We don't accept the rule of the million, we want people power /democratic rule. We want a responsible government, responsible to people, not only responsible to banks and conglomerate monopolies. Stop Climate Change. SWITCH to green energy."
