In the most recent episode of her Wardrobe Crisis podcast, fashion journalist Clare Press interviews Veja co-founder Sébastien Kopp. Veja is one of the most progressive modern fashion brands that we know of (and we’re very proud to have them on the Well Made Clothes website). With a transparent, fair and sustainable supply chain, this French-based, Brazil-made sneaker brand has a very inspiring approach to production. And it’s an approach that has helped to set a positive example for other fashion brands looking to produce in more sustainably.

By paying workers fairly for their work and supporting sustainable farming methods for their products, Veja is helping to ensure that we will still have the resources that we need to keep creating fashion in the future. In this podcast episode, Kopp provides a little more background behind their supply chain and why they have chosen to structure things this way.

He sheds light, for example, on how he and co-founder François-Ghislain Morillion travelled to countries like China, South Africa and India as part of their brand research – and the disappointing results that they found there in terms of supply chain management. “We saw that sustainable development was treated as a side project; it was not integrated into the business,” Kopp tells Press in the episode. “The thing we saw, if there was one conclusion [to be made], is that the environment, social welfare and happiness of the workers were never integrated into the business. And we thought the business of the future would be to care about the planet and the people.”

So Kopp and Morillion chose sustainable sneakers as a means to that end. Because sneakers can be worn by 3-year-olds and 80-year-olds alike. And, once you eradicate the high cost of advertising in this product category (as Veja has done), then you can create a product that is much more cost-effective – and has a positive impact on the environments and people to boot.
