Flat Shoes Are The New Heels, So We're Wearing These Styles All Summer

When Parisian stylist and Courrèges style director Lola Jacobs tied the knot in St-Tropez earlier this year, she did so in three elegantly relaxed looks: a Jacquemus knit dress for the night before, a shirt dress for the ceremony and a tank dress for the reception, both by Azzedine Alaïa. For all three, though, Jacobs chose to wear flat shoes instead of heels. Which symbolises an undeniable changing of the guard when it comes to fancy occasion dressing right now.

Where once a wedding dress code or Christmas Party invitation may have come with the subtext of: dress up, wear heels; the rules have now been tossed out the proverbial window. Anything goes below the ankles at friends’ weddings these days (be they black tie or cocktail) and the same can be said for other springtime events as well. Even Cannes attendees have flown in the face of the festival’s archaic red carpet rules of late and opted to wear flat shoes instead of heels to the French film event.

After all, what better accessory could there possibly be than comfort on the day? Suffice it to say, then, that flat shoes are irrefutably in – and we are using this as an excuse to wear flats to every single one of our fancy events coming up this summer. We plan on leaning into the comfort factor in glossy slides and criss-crossed sandals all summer long. Even if a little height isrequired, then we’re opting for flatforms all the way. So here are a few of our favourite flats for the celebratory season ahead.

1) The Energy Slide

The Energy Slide by Melissa is a dream for teaming with summer slip dresses. We especially love the Black Gloss colourway, because it fits in with our mostly black ~goth~ uniform and goes with pretty much every single thing that we own. Made from Melflex plastic (which is 100% recyclable) this crossover sandal works just as well for friends’ weddings and as it does for long summer days at the beach.

2) The Indio Whip Sandal

Teva makes some of the world’s most comfortable sandals for hiking and hanging out in – so there’s no reason why these uber comfy sandals can’t also become part of your fancy occasion wardrobe as well. The Indio Whip Sandal adds just a little height to your special occasion look (in flatform style, of course) and is perfect for summery weddings in both black and the blush colourway.

3) The Soul Slide

If you’re after something a little more streamlined, then the Soul Slide by Melissa is your best bet. It pairs just as well with blue denim as it does with silky dresses that are fit for a bridesmaid. We love that it comes in both a Black Gloss and a Nude Translucent option, because it means that there is always a Soul Slide to suit any outfit and occasion.
