The rate at which we're consuming fashion these days means that we've left the planet in quite a dire state of peril. So perhaps it should come as little surprise, then, that it's been predicted we will be using two Earths worth of resources by the year 2030. This staggering figure comes via the Copenhagen Fashion Summit's recent Pulse of The Fashion Industry report, which was written in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group.

And, according to the report, our demand for clothing is also expected to have risen by 63% within that same timeframe — which means that fast fashion might be set to get even faster, before it gets any better. When we consider these facts in light of recent findings that we only have three years to fight climate change before it's too late, something has clearly got to give when it comes to our consumption habits.

According to Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, "2020 is a hard deadline. There’s no turning back if we don’t bend the emissions curve within three years...there are no jobs on a dead planet.” So perhaps the best place to start in terms of doing our bit to address these worrying statistics, then, is to begin rethinking our own demand for clothing. By asking yourself 'how often do I buy clothing, is it going to last me a long time and do I really need it,' we can all hopefully start to make more positive purchasing decisions that will stand our planet in better stead for the future.
