Why I’m Wearing The Same Thing Everywhere This Winter

I have discovered the perfect winter outfit for me and I plan to wear it. A lot. So far, I’ve worn this ensemble to work, the pub, the park, brunch, dinner, lunch, a party, the movies and work again. This incredibly versatile outfit also got me through a five-hour bush walk and a weekend at my parent’s house. If it can withstand that then it can withstand anything!

Since I started wearing this outfit everywhere I’ve realised that nothing bad happens when you wear the same outfit everywhere. In fact, the opposite is true. The more you wear something, the more comfortable you feel in it. Wearing the same thing all the time also makes getting dressed in the morning incredibly easy. Oh and no one else cares if you wear the same thing more than once. Outfit repeating is not a thing!

My choice to wear the same thing every other day is also good for the planet. It means that I’m making the most out of what I have rather than consuming new things all the time.

Until very recently, I used to buy new clothes on a pretty regular basis. On my days off, I would pick something up from the op shop and I’d order clothes online every other week. But now, I’m trying this new thing called not buying stuff I don’t need. This is helping me kick my fast fashion habit and it’s also helping me figure out who I am as an adult human. When you stop buying into trends and start building a personal uniform, you have to decide how you want to present yourself to the world. This means that, consciously or unconsciously, you come up with a checklist of attributes that your clothing must have. My mental checklist looks something like this:

Flattering but not girly
A little bit fun

Most of the clothing I buy falls into a few, if not all, of these categories. When I’m in a store, these attributes help me to navigate the shelves for items of clothing that I’ll wear again and again. This means that I’m feeling a lot better about my purchases (and producing way less clothing waste) than I was a few months ago. On top of that, I have a clearer sense of who I am as a dresser and a person. Much to my mother’s dismay, I’ve discovered that I’m a jeans, t-shirt, sneaker and jacket kind of girl. I feel confident and comfortable in this outfit, no matter the occasion or dress code!
